GEOGRAPHICAL POSITION
Lentas was built on the southern coast of the prefecture of Heraklion at the foot of the Lion. The village combines mountain and sea and is preferred by nature lovers. From time to time, Lenta's waters are visited by Caretta-Caretta turtles, giving visitors the opportunity to admire them, a memorable experience.
HISTORY
The waters coming out from the fountains of the area, with healing abilities, moved the ancient Cretans to create one of the largest Asclepeions in the Mediterranean, where they used it for physiotherapy and baths.
With the creation of Asclepeion, trade and shipping evolved, as the location of the village was an ideal port for transportation and transfers to Africa and the Middle East.
On Byzantine Empire, General Nikephoros Phocas, recovered the lands he had lost from the Arab raids, built castles-walls around each harbor to strengthen their defense. One of them was the port of Lentas. Parts of the wall we are able to see at the foot of the Lion and the Xamidomouri cape.
